Real prices drive digital retailing satisfaction

Customers who shop online aren't looking for the lowest price, they're looking for an honest price.

According to a January Market Scan poll of 200 vehicle shoppers, nearly half of customers are willing to walk away from a vehicle purchase over a difference from the in-store price of as little as $75. Twenty-one percent of the shoppers polled said they'd reject a deal if the price in-store is off by less than $50.

Price remains the priority for car shoppers who answered the online survey, but 34 percent said they'd be willing to pay extra if it meant the online shopping experience accurately reflected the in-store process.

Many respondents felt the online price was akin to a false promise rather than a starting point for negotiation. Nearly half of respondents said entering the dealership scrapped any progress they made online.

To improve customer satisfaction, dealerships need to make sure their online shopping experienc…

Ram recalls 20,000 heavy-duty diesel trucks for fire risk

Stellantis is recalling more than 20,000 heavy-duty Ram diesel trucks globally over an issue that could cause an engine compartment fire.

The affected vehicles include 2021 Ram 2500 and 3500 pickups and 3500, 4500 and 5500 chassis cabs equipped with a Cummins 6.7-liter turbodiesel engine. In the U.S., the recall covers about 19,200 vehicles. It also covers an additional 685 vehicles in Canada and 223 in certain markets outside of North America.

In a document filed with U.S. vehicle safety regulators, the automaker previously known as Fiat Chrysler Automobiles said the vehicles "may experience an engine compartment fire originating from an electrical short in the intake air heater relay, which can potentially lead to a vehicle fire" whether the ignition is on or off.

A Stellantis spokesperson confirmed that the company is aware of three non-customer vehicle fires. The automaker is unaware of any related injuries, accidents, warranty claims or customer com…

MG positions Marvel R electric crossover as European tech flagship

MG Motor is positioning the Marvel R Electric compact SUV as the technology-led flagship of its European range as it expands in the region.

Sales of the battery-powered model will begin in the summer. It will compete against EVs such as the Volkswagen ID4 and Skoda Enyaq iV.

The Marvel R will only be sold as a left-hand-drive model, meaning it will not be offered in the UK, the brand's largest European market.

MG says features such as a 19.4-inch interior touchscreen and a 12.3 -inch digital instrument panel, boost the Marvel R’s credentials as a technology flagship.

The SUV will also have active safety equipment, MG said, without giving details.

The Marvel R Electric’s all-wheel-drive top-spec version has three electric motors for a combined output of 284 hp. It has a range of more than 400 km (249 miles) on a single charge as measured by Europe’s WLTP test cycle. The company did not give an exact figure.

MG declined to disclose th…

Honda to extend production stoppages at some North American plants

WASHINGTON -- Honda Motor Co. said on Tuesday it will extend production suspensions at some North American plants into the week of March 29 due to various supply chain issues.

Last week, the Japanese automaker said a variety of issues would force it to halt production at a majority of North American plants for the entire week of March 22 and impact production at the remainder of its North American plants.

Honda cited "impact from COVID-19, congestion at various ports, the microchip shortage and severe winter weather" for the production cuts.

The global shortage of semiconductor chips is hitting production around the world.

Last week, Toyota Motor Corp. said it was cutting production at four plants in Kentucky, West Virginia and Mexico, citing “a shortage of petrochemicals” and “recent severe weather conditions” affecting production.

Stellantis warned Saturday its highly profitable pickup trucks were hit by the issue, while Ford Motor Co. sa…

Tesla’s in-car cameras raise privacy concerns, Consumer Reports says

Tesla Inc.'s use of in-car cameras to record and transmit video footage of passengers to develop self-driving technology raises safety and privacy concerns, Consumer Reports said on Tuesday.

The consumer advocacy organization said on its website that the usage potentially undermines the safety benefits of driver monitoring, which is to alert drivers when they are not paying attention to the road.

"If Tesla has the ability to determine if the driver isn't paying attention, it needs to warn the driver in the moment, like other automakers already do," said Jake Fisher, senior director of Consumer Reports' auto test center. The camera "has the potential of really helping driving safety and alerting you if you're distracted. It could absolutely save lives," he said.

Automakers such as Ford Motor Co. and General Motors, whose monitoring systems do not record or transmit data or video, use infrared technology to identify drivers' eye movements or head…

Stellantis’ war on costs at Fiat factories in Italy begins with the toilets, unions say

MILAN -- Cost-cutting at Fiat's factories in Italy has led to cuts in cleaning services and the number of toilets available to workers, according to unions.

Carlos Tavares, CEO of Stellantis, the new group formed in January from the merger of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and PSA Group, has said that production costs at factories in Italy are up to four times more than in the automaker's plants in France or Spain.

Tavares has said the automaker will not cut jobs or close plants but he has promised more than 5 billion euros ($5.94 billion) per year in savings following the merger.

Davide Provenzano of the FIM union said Stellantis was taking action at its Mirafiori plant in Turin, where it builds the Fiat New 500 full-electric car, by reducing the amount of toilets available to workers, cutting cleaning shifts and temperatures, and reorganizing transport facilities.

"This is happening during COVID-19, when you should be increasing toilets availabl…

How pending rail merger could aid North American auto industry

Some Canadian auto industry executives hope Canadian Pacific Railway Ltd.’s agreement to buy Kansas City Southern eventually wins approval from a U.S. federal agency, believing the transaction will lead to a more efficient and cost-effective delivery of new vehicles throughout Canada, the U.S. and Mexico.

Brian Kingston, the head of the Canadian Vehicle Manufacturers’ Association, which represents the interests of the Detroit 3 automakers in Canada, says the auto industry depends on “reliable, efficient and cost-competitive transportation options.”

“Rail is a key piece of the overall transportation network, and if this merger increases options for the industry and lowers costs and makes the overall system more efficient, that’s fantastic,” he said.

However, the path to approval will not easy or quick.

While the U.S. Justice Department or Federal Trade Commission review mergers in other industries, railroad combinations must clear the five-pe…

2022 Audi RS E-tron GT: A sporty grand tourer with unflappable manners

The E-tron GT is Audi's third electric vehicle to make it to the U.S., following the E-tron compact crossover and the E-tron sportback. The five-seater is aerodynamically slippery and is built on the same platform as the Porsche Taycan. The RS E-tron GT packs 637 hp and 612 pound-feet of torque with an estimated range of 232 miles. Pricing for the RS E-tron GT will start at $139,900, excluding delivery. We've collected a sample of RS E-tron GT reviews from the automotive media.

"On the road, the RS GT tours grandly. It hums and hauls so smoothly that the big numbers on the speedometer readout might come as a surprise. The low, hefty weight of electric cars works in their favor when it comes to stable cornering, and 590 electric horses are more than enough to reshape your eyeballs. The GT's biggest challenges come from not having the longest range and not being the quickest or flashiest thrill ride in the park.

"Audi gets points for using the st…

Tata Nano, the people’s car of India, takes the stage

The Tata Nano, billed as the world's most inexpensive car, priced as low as $2,000, is formally introduced on March 23, 2009, in Mumbai, giving more residents of one the world's most populous countries the chance to buy a car for the first time.

Tata Group Chairman Ratan Tata, who personally championed the project, saw the Tata as a replacement for the droves of motorcycles and scooters on India's roads.

The herculean task of engineering and building the Nano became a source of national pride and industrial perseverance in India.

Since the Nano was first shown, Tata's main production plant had to be moved following land protests, the company posted its first annual loss in seven year and its credit rating was downgraded with the threat of further downgrades.

Because demand far outstripped supply, the first 100,000 owners were picked at random.

The Nano body and chassis were made of steel while the bumpers w…
